Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Ethnic militias have played a significant role in the persistence of communal violence in various parts of Nigeria, with Plateau State being one of the most affected regions. In Shendam LGA, ethnic militias have been involved in violent conflicts between different ethnic groups, often fueled by historical grievances, competition over resources, and political influences. According to Bakari and Mohammed (2023), these militias have undermined communal peace and security, leading to frequent clashes, displacement of communities, and the destruction of properties. Ethnic militias in Shendam have become a major challenge to peacebuilding efforts, as they often operate outside the formal structures of governance and security, making it difficult for authorities to address their activities effectively. This study seeks to examine the effect of ethnic militias on communal peace in Shendam LGA, exploring the factors that contribute to the rise of these militias and their impact on local communities.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The activities of ethnic militias in Shendam LGA have exacerbated ethnic tensions and contributed to the breakdown of communal peace. Despite various government interventions, including peace agreements and security operations, ethnic militias continue to operate with impunity, undermining efforts at reconciliation and peaceful coexistence. The persistence of these militias has led to increased insecurity and instability in the region, making it challenging for communities to thrive. This research aims to investigate the role of ethnic militias in disrupting communal peace in Shendam and assess the effectiveness of current peacebuilding strategies.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To assess the impact of ethnic militias on communal peace in Shendam LGA.
To identify the factors that contribute to the rise of ethnic militias in Shendam.

What factors contribute to the rise of ethnic militias in Shendam?
How effective are current peacebuilding efforts in resolving conflicts related to ethnic militias in Shendam?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: Ethnic militias do not significantly affect communal peace in Shendam LGA.
H₁: Ethnic militias significantly disrupt communal peace in Shendam LGA.
H₂: Peacebuilding efforts in Shendam have not been effective in addressing the challenges posed by ethnic militias.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will offer valuable insights into the role of ethnic militias in communal violence in Shendam, contributing to the broader understanding of ethnic conflicts in Plateau State. The findings will be useful for policymakers, security agencies, and peacebuilders in developing more targeted strategies for addressing ethnic militias and promoting lasting peace in the region.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
